Marlins 10, Pirates 3

The Pirates bid for a road series sweep of the Marlins came up short Sunday afternoon as the Fish fought back for a 10-3 victory. The Bucs close out April with an 11-13 record, two games out of first place.

Pirates took an early lead in this one as JHay led off the game with a double and Josh Bell followed it with a home run to right center for his fourth long ball of the season. Gregory Polanco doubled two at-bats later and John Jaso singled him in for a 3-0 lead, and it looked like another cruise for the Pirates at that point. In his last 14 games, Bell is hitting .341/.449/.634 with four home runs and seven RBIs after his slow start to the season.

The Marlins got two back in the 2nd and 4th innings off Pirates starter Chad Kuhl, but he would leave the game after Dee Gordon led off the bottom of the 5th inning with a hard grounder that hit Kuhl in the leg. Word after the game didn’t appear anything serious and looks like Kuhl will make his new scheduled start.

The bullpen struggled to hold the lead in this one and keep it close. Justin Bour singled in two runs to give the Marlins a 4-3 lead off Trevor Williams. And then Bour added on to his big day with a bomb to deep right field off Daniel Hudson in the bottom of the 7th inning to make it 6-3. The Marlins would continue to add on in a six-run inning and that was it for the Pirates in this one. Bour would finished 4-for-5 with six RBIs.

The bats had four hits in the 1st inning and then just four all game after that. The Pirates will continue their road trip into May with a four-game series in Cincinnati starting Monday night at 7:10. Gerrit Cole is set to go opposite Reds rookie LHP Amir Garrett.
