Detour to Boston

Before heading to Chicago and St. Louis for their schedule roadtrip, the Bucs took a detour to Boston to make up their rainout from last Thursday.

The Red Sox stumbled a bit after their 2-0 start versus the Pirates as they went 2-4 against the Tigers and Orioles. Meanwhile since starting 0-2 at Fenway Park this season, the Pirates have swept the Braves and then were swept by the Reds.

Hopefully the Pirates can get the bad taste out of their mouths from an awful series performance against the Reds, where they were outscored 22-5. It’s a quick turnaround today though with first pitch set at 2:05PM.

The pitching matchup in this game is the same as it was scheduled last Thursday. RHP Chad Kuhl will start for Pittsburgh opposite Red Sox southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez. Kuhl battled through a tough five innings last time out, allowing three runs (two earned) in his season debut while Rodriguez did even worse in his debut. He gave up four runs in 5.0 innings of work with three walks and two home runs.

The Pirates offense will look to wake up after a cold start to the season. They ranked dead last in the National League with a 67 wRC+ and a paltry .303 slugging percentage. The team has been getting on base for the most part, but went 0-for-24 with RISP in the Reds series. Those numbers aren’t sustainable, but they’ll need to turn it around with the Red Sox, Cubs, Cardinals and Yankees coming up next.

Here are the lineups for today’s game:
