Cardinals 7, Pirates 0

The Pirates chance at a season over .500 ended tonight with a 7-0 drubbing of the Cardinals. The chance to spoil the Cardinals postseason plans will have to wait another night. With the Giants victory over the Dodgers, the Cardinals are still one game behind them for the last wildcard spot.

The only thing I wanted to see tonight was Tyler Glasnow‘s final start of the season. Glasnow only allowed one hit in 5.0 innings, but it was a solo home run to Jedd Gyorko. But the control issues were there again with four walks along with four strikeouts and 79 pitches in the five innings. It was a typical Glasnow start that we’ve come to known, looks brilliant at times but continues to allow baserunners via the walk. But you can see the stuff is there and even with the four walks, he only allowed one run and kept the Pirates in the game. I feel that Glasnow is very close to putting it all together and being a great pitcher. He finishes the season with a 4.24 ERA despite 13 walks in 23.1 innings along with 24 strikeouts.

Trevor Williams relieved Glasnow and then gave up four runs (three earned) while only recording one out. Besides a nice debut on September 7, Williams has been pretty awful since then and currently has an 8.49 ERA in 11.2 innings.

Meanwhile, the bats had a forgettable night against Carlos Martinez. Martinez tossed 7.0 shutout innings on five hits, one walk and struck out nine. Let’s hope the Pirates put together a better performance Saturday against Michael Wacha. Tonight’s game sucked, but the Pirates have two more shots at playing spoiler and sticking it to the Cards.
