Bucs 10, Mariners 1

This was a fun game. Gerrit Cole tossed his first complete game of his career as the Pirates ace led the way to a 10-1 victory over the Mariners.

Cole was brilliant, allowing just three hits, one run while striking out six batters. He walked zero as he threw just 93 pitches, which is the first Pirates CG under 100 pitches since Liriano in 2013. Cole lowered his ERA to 2.78 on the season and quieted the yinzers who said he wasn’t an ace.

As for the bats, the Pirates offense scored runs in bunches with three runs in the 3rd inning, four runs in the 7th inning and three runs in the 8th. Andrew McCutchen had himself a game (finally) with three hits, including his 15th home run of the season, a three-run bomb in the 8th inning. He drove in four runs overall.

Jung Ho Kang drove in four runs as well with a big bases clearing double in the bottom of the 7th inning that broke the game wide open. Kang also walked with the bases loaded earlier in the game to drive in a run. Jordy Mercer lead off against the lefty with three hits and David Freese recorded two hits.

The Pirates have an off day today before opening a three-game series Friday at the house of horrors in Milwaukee known as Miller Park. That’s the start of a six-game road trip with a trip down south against the Braves after this weekend series.
