Pirates 6, Rockies 3

The Pirates and Rockies played a makeup game from yesterday’s rain out on the North Shore this afternoon with the Pirates taking the rubber match 6-3.

It’s the Pirates second consecutive series win this homestand and they will close it out with three games against the Diamondbacks starting tomorrow night.

This one started out nice for the Bucs with spot starter Ryan Vogelsong tossing two scoreless frames and coming to bat with a 1-0 lead and bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning. Vogelsong was hit square in the face with a Jordan Lyles offering and he left the game in what was a scary moment at PNC Park. Vogelsong was carted off and has been admitted to Allegheny General where he will spend the night. Let’s all hope for the best for Vogy as it was a scary scene today.

The painful RBI gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead and Wilfredo Boscan took over for Vogelsong and tossed 4.0 innings of effective relief with two runs allowed. He also drove in a run in the bottom of the 3rd inning for his first career RBI. The Pirates cruised with the lead until the 9th inning when once again the bullpen couldn’t get it done with a big lead and Mark Melancon had to come in to record his 15th save.

These kinds of games when the bullpen (besides Melancon) can’t close it out and save Melancon from having to come in for an out or two, is exactly what’s wrong with the bullpen. It’s an area the Pirates will definitely have to address in the next two months heading into the trade deadline.

The Pirates improve to 24-19 and move within 5.5 of the Cubs with the Cubs and Cardinals set to start a three-game series in St. Louis. Here’s hoping these two teams beat the hell out of each other. The Diamondbacks come to PNC tomorrow to open a three-game series before the Bucs head on the road to Texas and Miami to close out May.
