Game 20: Pirates at Coors

The Pirates continue their road trip out west with four games against the Colorado Rockies before coming home Friday.

The fact that the Pirates play the next four games at Coors Field features some good and bad news:

GOOD NEWS: The Pirates number one ranked offense will be hitting in Coors Field.

BAD NEWS: The Pirates 23rd ranked pitching staff will be pitching in Coors Field.

Toss in the Rockies worst pitching staff (5.68 ERA, 1.45 WHIP) and their murderous lineup and yesterday’s wild affair might just be a sign of things to come for this four-game series. The Buccos bats should be even more potent at Coors where the air is thinner and travels a lot further, but their struggling pitching staff could really be in for some long games. The Rockies lineup is tied for second in home runs with 28, so expect some home run balls this series.

The Pirates sit at 10-9 on the season and could really use a winning series in Colorado before heading home for a homestand against the Reds and Cubs. But at this point with how bad the pitching has been (especially out of the bullpen), I’ll take a 2-2 split.

The Pirates are 93-91 all-time against the Rockies, but a dismal 38-51 at Coors lifetime. Despite that record at Coors, the Pirates most recently swept a four-game series last September.

Here’s your starting pitching for this series:

Tonight: LHP Jeff Locke vs RHP Chad Bettis
Tuesday: RHP Gerrit Cole vs LHP Jorge De La Rosa
Wednesday: LHP Jon Niese vs RHP Jon Gray
Thursday: RHP Juan Nicasio vs RHP Tyler Chatwood

Locke set to pitch tonight at Coors against Cargo, Arenado, Story, etc has my head hurting a lot. Though just because it’s baseball and nothing makes sense usually, watch Locke fire seven shutout innings or something. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

As for the lineup tonight, Cutch gets the night off after struggling through most of April. I’m not sure why Hurdle doesn’t bat Cervelli in the two hole when Cutch sits. Anyway, here’s the full lineup. Let’s Go Bucs.

Pirates Lineup:
Jaso 1B
Joyce LF
Freese 3B
Marte CF
Cervelli C
Polanco RF
Harrison 2B
Mercer SS
Locke SP
