Game 17: Niese vs Diamondbacks

Tonight, the Pirates will continue their #latenightBUCN tour by squaring off vs the Diamondbacks at 9:40 PM at Chase Field. After dropping two of three against the Padres, they will look to send out Jon Niese and defang the Snakes to make something out of their west coast trip.

Niese has progressively gotten better with each start this season and is coming off of a seven scoreless inning outing where he allowed just three hits. After three starts, Niese now holds a 2-0 record with a 3.50 ERA, though he has not found great success at Chase Field. He currently has a lifetime 6.26 ERA in the dessert while also having a 5.93 ERA against the Diamondbacks in seven total starts. None of that game with the defense and pithing guru the Pirates provide, so tonight could be a great time to break the trend.

Arizona will feature Patrick Corbin in tonights contest. Corbin is coming off Tommy John surgery that found him pitching only 85 innings last season, but has shown glimpses of being a top of the rotation pitcher. For 2016, he is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA. The lefty will surely be a quality test against the Buccos who have mightily struggled to produce runs consistently.

Today, the Pirates recalled Jason Rogers from Indy and optioned Cole Figueroa in his place. Rogers will immediately get the start in John Jaso‘s place. Since Jaso owns a .177 batting average against lefties, the timing of the call up makes sense. Also, the Pirates have only faced one lefty this year, which took place on Tuesday, so it made sense to keep Rogers in the minors to collect some much needed at bats to begin the season. Rogers has been playing well in Indianapolis and leaves batting .366 with three home runs in 41 at bats.
