Game 13: Brewers Series Finale

Pittsburgh will look to close out the series today in incredible fashion. I mean that in the most literal sense. Today is the first Sunday where the Pirates are turning back time and sporting the gold “Fam-a-lee” throwbacks. They also will look to close out the series with a win to get themselves back over .500 on the season.

Todays matchup will be between Juan Nicasio and Zach Davies. After having an amazing spring, Nicasio has had split success on the year. In his first start, he threw 6 innings of one run baseball and totaling seven strikeouts. However, he was lit up for his second start when he pitched only 3 innings, giving up four runs, six hits, and walking a whopping five batters. I would like to say today could be a game we see him get back on track, especially with the news that Ryan Braun will not be starting today.

Davies is making his 2016 debut today, which could be trouble for either team. The fact that the Pirates have never faced him, much like Tim Melville of the Reds, could lead to a mixed bag. For his career, Davies has only pitched 34 big league innings since making his way to Milwaukee in the trade that sent Gerardo Parra to the Orioles. His minor league numbers are good, but there is nothing that jumps at you. To put it in perspective, he is currently listed as the Brewers #19 prospect and projects as a #4 starter at best. Hopefully, the Bucco’s take advantage of this, and the lack of Braun’s bat in the lineup to take the series win.

We all know the bats have been present all season, and last night Pittsburgh found success in scoring in runs too. John Jaso continued his hot streak by collecting two hits and extending his hit streak to seven games. After Starling Marte was hit by a pitch last night, the Pirates are waiting to see how the hand holds up before announcing their lineup. This will be updated upon announcement.

Pirates Lineup:

  1. Jaso 1B
  2. McCutchen CF
  3. Freese 3B
  4. Joyce RF
  5. Cervelli C
  6. Polanco LF
  7. Harrison 2B
  8. Mercer SS
  9. Nicasio P
