Pirates-Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox will be hosting your Pittsburgh Pirates today at JetBlue Park. Today’s game is going to be played under the lights as first pitch is scheduled for 6:05PM.

Ryan Vogelsong will be taking the hill tonight to try and attempt a late push for a rotation spot. In nine innings, the 38 year old holds a 4 ERA with just four strike outs. With the way Nicasio is pitching, I think a rotation spot is a long shot, but Vogelsong could provide a very Blanton-esque role out of the pen.

The Red Sox will be throwing their very expensive brand new toy in today’s game, otherwise known as David Price. The lefty will give the Pirates a nice test this late in spring to see what damage this lineup can really do. Price owns a 3.86 era in seven innings of work this spring, but is also coming off a season where he pitched 220 innings of 2.45 ERA baseball. It’s no secret this guy is one of the best in the game.

In a new move this spring, Jordy Mercer will be leading off. This shouldn’t come as a shock, and also could be something we see frequently this year vs lefties. As mentioned in the Lineup Projection post, Mercer absolutely pummels left hand pitching. If he’s able to continue this trend, then McCutchen should have ample opportunities to drive in runs at the two hole. Freese, Marte, and Cervelli will follow in the lineup. I am completely unsold on batting Freese third regularly, but let’s see what this cool cat can do.

Pirates lineup:

  1. Mercer SS
  2. McCutchen CF
  3. Freese 3B
  4. Marte LF
  5. Cervelli C
  6. Rogers 1B
  7. Harrison 2B
  8. Polanco RF
  9. Vogelsong P
