Orioles 6, Pirates 5

Matt Joyce and Pedro Florimon tried to do everything they could this afternoon to earn a bench spot on the Opening Day roster as the Bucs lost to the Orioles 6-5 on a walkoff in Sarasota.

Joyce gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the 1st inning, his second of the spring. Joyce also had an RBI single later in the game to finish with two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Florimon rallied the team late with a two-RBI triple in the 8th inning. Cole Figueroa, Michael Morse and Chris Stewart also finished with two hits as well.

Jon Niese blanked the O’s for the first three innings then ran into some long ball trouble in the 4th inning as Mark Trumbo and Jonathan Schoop took him deep. The Orioles are going to be the definition of feast or famine this season—strike out a ton and hit a lot of home runs. Niese ended up going 6.0 innings with four runs allowed. He’s given up quite a bit of home runs this season and will need to keep the ball on the ground to find success this year.

In the bullpen, Jorge Rondon allowed a run on a home run to J.J. Hardy and Eric O’Flaherty pitched a scoreless 8th inning and then lost the game on a walkoff single by Joey Rickard.

Tomorrow the Pirates continue south to Fort Myers to take on the Red Sox in a night game starting at 6:05. Ryan Vogelsong will toe the rubber for the Pirates as he’ll face Boston’s high-priced ace David Price.
